Questa maschera ad elmo, chiamata Bwoom, danza durante le cerimonie di iniziazione maschile (nkaan); esse hanno la funzione di insegnare agli iniziati la storia, i valori culturali di Kuba e di onorare la memoria di Woot (il padre fondatore e antenato di tutti i re Kuba). Le opinioni su ciò che rappresenta Bwoom sono diverse : alcune fonti indicano che la maschera rappresenta un principe (fratello minore del re), afflitto da un problema neurologico che provocava il gonfiore della testa, altre che sia l’immagine di uno degli abitanti originari della regione, i Pigmei Twa, altre ancora che bwoom sia stato creato per il re regnante dell’epoca, Miko mi-Mbul, creata in alternativa alla maschera reale mwaash ambooy, per essere indossata dal re per curare la sua malattia mentale (da qui la sua descrizione locale “una persona di basso rango poco degna di essere incarnata dal re”). Bwoom è universalmente ritenuto uno spirito della natura (ngesh; pl. mingesh) che appare agli iniziati nkaan ed aiuta a potenziare l’influenza positiva degli spiriti della natura sulla vita dei Kuba.
This helmeted mask, called Bwoom, dances during male initiation ceremonies (nkaan); they have the function of teaching initiates the history and cultural values of the Kuba people and honoring the memory of Woot (the founding father and ancestor of all Kuba kings). There are different opinions on what Bwoom represents: some sources indicate that the mask represents a prince (younger brother of the king), afflicted by a neurological problem that caused the head to swell, others that it is the image of one of the original inhabitants of the region, the Twa Pygmies, others that Bwoom was created for the reigning king of the time, Miko mi-Mbul, created as an alternative to the royal mask Mwaash ambooy, to be worn by the king to cure his mental illness (hence the his local description “a person of low rank hardly worthy to be embodied by the king”). Bwoom is universally believed to be a nature spirit (ngesh; pl. mingesh) who appears to Nkaan initiates and helps to enhance the positive influence of nature spirits on the lives of the Kuba.
